Minimally Invasive Surgical Options

At MISSI, we know how stressful and frightening the thought of spine surgery can be. If conservative measures have been unsuccessful in treating your pain, or if your spinal pathology has caused a symptomatic neurological deficit, surgery might be necessary. Dr. Shiau’s expertise in minimally invasive neurosurgery will allow him to offer you with the least invasive and most appropriate surgical approach to correcting your spinal condition. During the pre-surgical planning period, Dr. Shiau’s compassionate and knowledgeable demeanor will help provide you with the confidence of knowing you are in the right hands.

Traditional, open spine surgery involves cutting or stripping the muscles from the spine in order to perform the corrective procedure. Due to his expertise in minimally invasive neurosurgery, Dr. Shiau is able to perform the same “open or traditional” surgeries in a much less invasive manner.  Through a series of dilation and microscopic manipulations, Dr. Shiau is able to separate the fibers of the muscles surrounding the spine rather than cutting and stripping the muscles away from the spine as in open surgery. Minimally invasive spine surgery takes no longer than “open” surgery, and typically the following surgeries can be done on an outpatient basis.
